Winter driving - Mastering your reaction time in a skid

Jan. 30, 2026

Winter holds surprises for all drivers, both novices and those with experience behind the wheel. Sometimes, a simple patch of snow can easily cause an unexpected slip if not approached correctly. So what should you do?

Here are a few tips for reacting properly during a skid:

  1. Stay calm – Panic leads to abrupt movements that make the situation worse.
  2. Look where you want to go – Your hands will instinctively follow.
  3. Release the brake pedal if you're braking, and ease off the accelerator gently to slow down gradually and regain traction.
  4. Steer into the skid: if the rear slides left, turn left. If the rear slides right, turn right.
  5. Be gentle – Make smooth, precise movements. Abrupt movements can cause another skid in the opposite direction.

Our best advice to avoid this situation? Keep a safe distance from other drivers. Whether you're on the highway or on one of Quebec's many scenic routes, please slow down and enjoy yourself.
