Traveling with pets - Be prepared for an adventure !

Sept. 9, 2026

We tell you often: planning your trips is the first step toward safe and efficient travel. Planning matters even more as the car fills up with passengers. For example, it helps to know where to stop when one of your kids asks for a bathroom break.

But what about your four-legged passengers? They need special attention on the road too. Here is a short list of tips to help make sure your pets enjoy the trip as much as you do.

  • Plan regular stops. This is even more important for our furry friends. Dogs in particular can find it stressful to be confined to a small space. Plan stops in large, safe areas, such as dog parks.
  • Pack for their needs. Pets can’t flush the toilet, so bring bags, a litter box and other essentials. Make the most of each stop by combining a short walk with a bathroom break.
  • Keep their stress down. As mentioned above, car travel can be stressful for pets. If your pet is in a carrier, cover it with a blanket. Stay in touch with your pet to reassure it, and bring treats to reward good behaviour.
  • Always keep your pets on a leash. This tip is especially important because you may be visiting new places your pets don’t know, and popular stops can be crowded. Stress can affect their behaviour.
