Spring - Between beauty and danger

April 2, 2026

For many, spring brings renewal and the return of warmer weather: the days grow longer, the warmth gradually settles in, and the harshness of winter begins to fade.

Although the cold season hasn't quite had its last word, some drivers already switch their mindset to the warmer season. Here is a reminder of the key things to watch for in the coming weeks.

  • The rapid melting of snow remains the defining challenge of the spring season. Beyond major floodings that may affects certain regions of Québec, it is the sudden accumulation of water on roads that is most likely to cause you trouble.
  • Road conditions will certainly give drivers headaches. Road deterioration is mainly caused by the thawing of the ground, but can also result from heavy vehicles and dangerous driving.
  • Temperature swings bring their share of challenges. Morning frost will make roads slippery, and daytime heat will melt snow, which can then refreeze as ice once night falls.
  • Wildlife is more active in spring. Expect more animal crossings and surprise encounters at dawn and dusk.

All of these hazards share one very simple solution: slow down. By reducing your speed, you give yourself the time to react to the unexpected. And when in doubt, don't forget to look for a Villages-relais along your route for a safe and restful break!
