As autumn settles in and the leaves begin to fall, a familiar list of seasonal chores awaits us around the corner. One of the most important changes is swapping out our tires.

While there are different ways to tackle this task, we’d like to take a moment to share our own tips and recommendations.
The Right Time
Before anything else, decide whether to call in a professional or take on the role of a mechanic yourself! Changing tires isn’t overly complex, but it does require some strength and proper equipment. We recommend checking out this step-by-step guide from Protégez-vous.ca to understand the process.
If you prefer to leave it to a professional, don’t wait to book your appointment. Legally, all drivers in Québec must have certified winter tires installed by December 1st. The busy season for garages starts in mid-October, so we suggest contacting your mechanic before the end of September to secure a spot. Consider your driving habits and local climate to choose the most appropriate date.
While summer tires perform well on dry and semi-wet roads, their effectiveness drops significantly as autumn sets in. It’s recommended to switch to winter tires when the average temperature stays below 7°C for a week. For most of Québec, this means installing winter tires before the beginning of November. Delaying this puts you ,and others, at unnecessary risk.
The Right Product
Need new tires this year? Trusted sources, like "Le Guide de l’auto", offer excellent advice on which brands to choose, or avoid. Research well-known manufacturers to read consumer reviews and find a tire line that fits your budget. Don’t hesitate to consult a certified retailer for professional guidance.
Let’s also talk about the so-called “all-season tires certified for winter”: according to CAA Québec, these models are not suitable for Québec’s harsh winter conditions. Their rubber is stiffer than that of conventional winter tires, making them less effective on icy and snowy surfaces. We strongly recommend avoiding this type of tires. A true winter tire remains the only reliable option for facing our unique driving conditions.
